This awesome 1946 Chevrolet 3100 1/2 ton pick up was treated to a very nice, frame-off restoration by the previous owner in Arizona who wanted to build a truck for his wife to join him at the local car events. He had quite a few classics over the years and set out to find as rust free of a truck to start out that he could. He did not have to travel far and found this one local to him in Arizona about 7 years ago. It had been an Oregon truck most of its life prior to that and was basically rust free but in need of restoration….perfect for what he had planned…and so it began!! Over the next 3 years he had professionals perform the majority of the transformation and restoration, resulting in the truck you see today. He wanted to keep the classic look and originality but make sure it was going to be a safe and reliable truck for his wife to get in an drive whenever, wherever. He was not concerned about putting a high horsepower, ground pounding motor under the hood but still wanted it to be a truck that could be driven on todays roads at todays speeds. He used a late 70’s 250 6 Cylinder that he had completely rebuilt and mated it to a completely rebuilt turbo 350 Automatic transmission that gave the truck plenty of pep without guzzling fuel. He added an independent front suspension, slightly lowered the truck, added power front disc brakes and a nice sounding exhaust and ended up with a super sweet running ’46 Chevy truck! The frame and body were separated and sandblasted and refinished to what I would consider a great local show car level. The intention was not to trailer it or be featured in magazines, but instead build a high quality classic truck that you would not be afraid to drive and at the same time would stand the test of time and make a great investment that could be enjoyed. He clearly accomplished these goals as you will see in the pics and video that follow. As with most car families, they decided they were not driving it enough to keep it long term and he had other projects he wanted to sink some money in to so he decided to pass this sweet truck along to the next car guy or gal to enjoy….maybe you!!!? I will do my best to provide enough large images, a video of the truck starting and running, and an honest description to help you decide if this sweet ’46 belongs in your garage. Now let me mention that if you live in an area that has recently gotten hit by winters nastiness and know you will not be able to take this truck out on the road for several months, I am willing to store the truck for up to 2 months if needed in my indoor showroom/warehouse once it has been paid for. Of course, if you are like me and want it in your garage ASAP, or you are lucky enough to live somewhere that weather is not a factor, then I would be happy to assist you to get a great rate on Enclosed Transport. I welcome overseas buyers as well. As with all of my classics I do have this truck listed on my site and several other national websites so if you determine this is the one for you feel free to call me at 770-359-8400 to discuss how we can make that happen before the next car guy or gal scoops it up. Sit back and enjoy!!
I just love the body lines, front grill, and styling on the ’46!! As I mentioned, this truck received a complete frame-off restoration that was completed about 4 years ago. This is an all steel body and has most of its original body panels. After sandblasting the entire truck, the previous owner decided that the bed had too many dings and dents and decided to buy a brand new steel bed from Mar K. Of course at the same time an all new oak wood bed was purchased which looks gorgeous against the Pewter gray color of this truck. He said that all other body panels including the cab were believed to be original to this truck. The actual paint color they chose was called shoreline mist metallic and it is a Base coat/clear coat. The body panels are extremely straight and everything fits up really nicely. Doors close great and line up well. The front grille and front bumper were sent off and professionally re-chromed and look like new. The bed was nicely finished and slicked out with tailgate releases mounted inside the bed and the bed rails were sealed up nicely. A nice roll pan with tail lights from a ’41 Chevy were installed and the rear bumper was deleted for a smoothed out look. The original roll out front windshield functions nicely and really provides a great flow of air on a spring or summer day. As you will see in the pictures the truck looks beautiful and it is. However it is not without a few flaws in the paint that are only noticed under close inspection. Most people would not notice, but I like to mention anything I have noticed. There are some minor flaws under the paint in a few spots but I had the truck wet sanded and buffed out which really cleared up most of them. There are a few tiny rock chips that have been touched up, a very fine scratch on one of the running boards, and a minor crack in the paint below the drivers side grille. Basically, it is a truck that will win plenty of trophies at the local shows but is not going to a a national award winner. Again, this truck was built to be driven. I am very confident the next lucky owner will be very satisfied with the quality of this build unless they are looking for a flawless trailer queen. All of the glass and weatherstripping appear to have been replaced and look great. Windows all function nicely. After the truck was wet sanded and buffed out we had Larry from Conways Customs stop by to lay down some great looking pinstripes. He matched the art deco lines of this truck nicely and you will see some of the work in the pics below that were done in a great crimson red color. These 1946 trucks did not have a Chevy logo on the tailgate so he did a custom Chevrolet Signature that has a 3-D look to it and really helps this truck stand out. I think the photo tour of the body below will tell you all you need to know.
Complimenting the Shoreline Mist Metallic exterior is beautiful gray custom interior. Again, the theme was to keep the original classic look but with a bit more comfort. To achieve this the original gas tank was moved from behind the bench seat to under the bed and a new reclining bench seat from Glide with all new seat foam was custom upholstered and installed. The color match is awesome and the material is a suede like feel that is super durable and will not get hot in the summer months. The same fabric was used on the custom door panels, headliner and visors. Color matched custom carpeting was installed as well. The original gauge cluster was sent out and rebuilt to be compatible with the upgraded 12V electrical. All of the gauges appear to be functioning correctly. As you will see the odometer reads just under 1800 miles which is how many miles have been put on the truck since the restoration was completed. For safety, seat belts were added as well as turn signals. There has been a horn button installed under the dash and a switch for the electric cooling fans. The wiring was completely replaced with a Painless wiring harness. The steering wheel appears to be an original and is in great condition overall with just minor stress cracks that are not very noticeable. The automatic shifter on the column functions nicely. The only thing that could still be added if desired is a stereo system or iPod connection but I think the sound of the exhaust will be music to your ears. The wipers were upgraded with a brand new electric wiper motor system. A Lokar Emergency brake was added neatly. Conway added some subtle pin striping on the dash as well. The interior is truly near flawless and has a great vintage look to it. Take a look inside:
With just under 1800 miles on the driveline since the restoration this truck runs and drives fantastic. A nicely built 250 cubic inch, 6 cylinder motor was purchased from Engine Warehouse out of WA state. Mated to it is a completely rebuilt, smooth shifting, turbo 350 Automatic transmission. This combination has surprisingly good power and the ability to cruise at Highway speeds without issue. The install was done professionally with all new mounting hardware. The engine itself was nicely detailed out to match the theme of the truck. Stock manifold breathes out a custom exhaust that exits under the drivers side running board. Make sure you listen to the video that follows to hear how grew this truck sounds. It sounds like a small block under the hood. The truck was slightly lowered with a new independent front end from TCI was supplied by Danny’s Rod Shop. The rack and pinion steering handles beautifully with little effort. All the fuel lines and brake lines are new as well as all related components. Stopping is a breeze thanks to a custom power front disc brake. New rear springs with reversed perches to lower it a bit for a great stance. The rear end is a rebuilt 10 bolt from a ’69 Camaro with 3:28 gears which are nice for cruising. The cooling system is all new with an electric fan installed behind the front grille with a switch under the dash when needed. There is also an automatic transmission cooler mounted behind the grille. HEI distributor with electronic ignition for easy starts. The list of new components goes on and on!!! Great set of 15″ Chrome Smoothie steel wheels with chrome moon hub caps wrapped in a like new set of meaty radial tires. Again, this truck was built for his wife to drive and it was not built to sell….it was originally built to keep so it was done right. I have driven this truck and it s a sweet ride with surprisingly good power and acceleration and a great rumble from the exhaust. This truck really handles the road beautifully which is quite an accomplishment on these old Chevy trucks. So many of the old trucks look great in pics but very few are actually a pleasure to drive….this one is!! As you will see in the pictures below, the engine bay and undercarriage look fantastic and are ready for the shows if desired. Make sure you also listen to the video that follows to hear this baby start up and running!!
The gentleman who had this truck restored kept almost every receipt for the work he had done. He also included a shop manual, an original owners manual, and a custom car cover for the next owner.
