The 1973 Mustang Convertible was the last of the Pony Convertibles until a decade later when Ford re-introduced convertible Mustangs to the market.  There has been quite a surge in the popularity of the 1971-1973 Mustangs over the last year or so and having driven this particular one for the last few days I can see why.  I have always been a huge fan of the ’65-68 Body styles and never really paid much attention to the bigger bodied ’71-73 Convertibles. Ford only produced 11,853 Convertible Mustangs in 1973. This ’73 Convertible has opened my eyes and I can now add this body style to my list of favorites!  If you are in the market for an investment quality, unmolested, Classic Mustang Convertible, in perhaps the nicest color combination, that can be driven and shown, then get ready because this may be the car for you!!

Here is the brief story behind this gorgeous convertible. We recently acquired it from a Dentist who originally purchase it in 1978 in Arizona from the original owner.  About a month later he ordered a brand new Corvette from a dealer and for a while he kept both cars. Reluctantly in 1982 he sold the Mustang Convertible.  Six years later when he and his wife moved to Ohio he decided he missed his old convertible so much that he found out who the current owner was and he bought the car back in 1988.  At that time the car had 59,755 miles on it.  He owned the car for the next 24 years accumulating only an additional 4000 miles on it in that time. When he bought the car back in 1988 he said the paint had faded some and he wanted it to be perfect so he had it professionally repainted in its original Bright Red Paint code.  This was 24 years ago and the paint still looks absolutely beautiful today as you will see in the pictures. He babied this car throughout its life and he had a separate garage for his collector cars.  He always properly winterized it and only drove this car on sunny spring and summer days. For many years his wife tried to convince him to sell the Mustang but he could never bring himself to let her go. Well, he finally did and I am now offering this gem to the next lucky owner.  I have been driving this car for the past 3 days, top-down in 80 degree sunny weather and it has been an absolute joy to drive. The Powerful , original 351 V8 has plenty of giddy up and this car glides along the road. This beauty gets all the stares, comments and thumbs up you can imagine and it is truly a quality classic that someone is going to be thrilled to own.  I will do my best to provide enough pictures, a video of the car running and an honest description to help you decide if this is the right Pony Convertible for you. Sit back and enjoy!

The body on this  Bright Red, color code 2B, ’73 Convertible is in amazing condition.  Especially when you consider the car was last painted 24 years ago.  This Pony has all of its original body panels and they are extremely straight!! Body gaps are very even and doors open and shut rock solid with no sag. This is not a car you need to worry about any rust issues as there are none!  While many of the “71-73 Mustang Convertibles have been altered to resemble Mach 1’s this one is true to her original classic form.  A white painted pin stripe accents the body line.  The ’73 received a color coded Urethan front bumper which looks great. Rear bumper and all of the body chrome looks fantastic. One of the few changes made by the owner was the addition of period correct Cragar Chrome wheels which really look great on this car and are in like new condition.  The only minor flaws I could spot were a few tiny paint chips along the drivers door edge and a small 1 ” crack in the paint on the hood. Both of these can easily be touched up if desired.  Overall I think it is fair to rate the body on this car a strong 9 out of 10 and keep in mind just how unmolested and original it is. Here is a walk around tour of the body:

Complimenting the stunning Bright Red body of this Pony is a White Power Convertible Top with a crystal clear glass rear window and original white knitted vinyl interior.  The white power top is in excellent condition overall and functions perfectly and seals up very nicely.  It appears to be the original top so there is some minor discoloration as you would expect. The original boot cover for the convertible boot cover fits nicely and is in great shape.  The interior is in fantastic condition. The original CW coded White knitted vinyl seats have sort of a houndstooth look to them that is very nice. Front and rear seats are in great condition with no rips or holes.  I was very impressed with how comfortable the high back bucket seats were especially when compared to early year Mustang bucket seats. Dash pad is excellent with no cracks. Center Console is in great shape. The gauges are crystal clear and this car has a factory in-dash tach.  Steering wheel is in great shape.  An aftermarket AM/FM Cassette player was added and I do have the original AM/FM radio that will go with the car.  The door panels are original and look great although I did spot a couple of very small cracks on the passenger side door panel. All of the gauges and lights appear to be working properly.  This is an original Factory Air conditioned car and the previous owner had the original compressor upgraded to a newer more efficient compressor. The A/C seems to be working fine although it will probably need to be charged for the season to be icy cold as the previous owner indicated he felt there was a leak and he charged it each summer.  Overall the interior is in awesome condition!!! As great as this Pony Convertible looks,  it drives even better!!!!!!  The original H code 351 V8 has under 64,000 original miles on it and runs absolutely fantastic.  The previous owner decided that he wanted a little extra horsepower and upgraded the original 2bbl carb to a 4bbl Holley Carburetor.  I put about 70 miles on the car in the last couple of days and it was a blast to drive at any speed.  The biggest difference I found in driving this car compared to 65-68 Mustangs is that this car drives like a luxury muscle car and glides along the road. It is a much more comfortable riding car and handles tighter and easier then the early year Mustangs. This car has Power steering and Power front disc brakes. It is an extremely easy car to drive!!! Original FMX automatic transmission was rebuilt several years ago and shifts very smooth.  We are having summer like temperatures and I drove this car for over an hour in 80 degree temperatures and it runs nice and cool with no issues whatsoever! Tires are close to new. Dual exhaust has that sweet rumble you would expect to hear without being too loud or obnoxious. This is the perfect Mustang convertible for the car guy or girl looking for a beautiful classic that he or she can get in and drive and enjoy without worries. I did not touch the engine bay so that you can see just how original and clean it was.  It could easily be dolled up for show purposes if desired.   The undercarriage of this Pony is rock solid and rust free with all its original floorpans. A light undercoating was applied back in 1988 when the car was repainted.  Inside of trunk is also rock solid with no rust issues.  This Mustang is simply a great find!! There is also a short video at the end of the listing so you can hear this Pony running!
